Thanksgiving Day just passed, and we hope that you have saved time in your busy holiday schedule to pause and give thanks. At Inspired Financial, we have so very much to be thankful for, including our relationship with you! To share our gratitude, we’d like to give you some thoughts. Thoughts on giving, that is.
With the political, social and economic tension we have seen this year, and we are still seeing, it’s easy to grow disheartened and lose faith in many aspects. It might help to think about charitable giving to bring us hope during these turbulent times. Thanks to research-oriented organizations such as Giving USA, The Giving Pledge, and many others, the evidence on our giving tendencies becomes clear, with much room for optimism to be found.
Myanmar is one of the world’s poorest nations yet has the most generous people, collectively. Their generosity can be assessed on three levels: helping strangers, donating money to a charity, and donating time to an organization. Based on recent data, Myanmar ranked highest in donating both time and money, with a whopping 92% of those surveyed allocating a portion of their hard-earned money to charity.
Similarly, some of the world’s wealthiest families have been dedicating most of their wealth to philanthropy. In 2017, Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, made headline news by informing their newborn daughter that they were going to pledge 99% of their Facebook shares to a giving mission, to make the world a better place for her. Other billionaires like Warren Buffett and Bill Gates have announced publicly that they will donate most of their fortune to charities instead of leaving it to their children.
Most of the rest of us appear to be doing our bit, as well. According to Giving USA, Americans gave $449.65 billion to charities in 2019, with 70 percent of the donations coming straight from individual donors. Here’s to us regular folks!
Maya Angelou once said, “When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully, everyone is blessed”. If you are considering donating money to charities, contact us and let us know. We will be happy to look at the most efficient way for you to donate to your favorite charity.
We wish you and yours a prosperous and fulfilling 2021!
