Fit Travel to Your Personality

Where should you go on your next vacation trip?  Your satisfaction and enjoyment level may depend on who you are, according to psychologist Joshua Jackson, associate professor at Washington University in St. Louis.  He identifies five core personality types—extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism and openness.  And then he identifies a great potential vacation destination for people with each personality trait.

1. Extraversion

Extroverts like to start conversations and are often described as the life of the party.  Their perfect destination is Australia, which has a culture of backpackers and travelers, and a culture where you never feel alone.  There’s no language barrier if you can overcome a variety of slang expressions. Other possible destinations are New York City and London, for their buzz and energy.

2. Agreeableness

People with an agreeable personality are empathetic, generous and interested in spending time exploring new cultures.  They might enjoy the hospitality that tourists typically find in the Republic of Georgia.  Another possibility is to take on a generous service project in Nepal, which offers a once-in-a-lifetime chance to hike in the Himalayas.

3. Conscientiousness

Conscientious travelers tend to be very organized, prepared and focused on following a schedule.  For them, Denmark might be the ideal location, due to the efficient transportation system and pristine beauty.

4. Neuroticism

What if you have neurotic tendencies, and worry about the details or feel anxious about unpleasant surprises?  Consider booking an all-inclusive resort stay in Mexico or a boat tour of the Italian coast, both of which take care of the details and let travelers focus on enjoying the new culture.

5. Openness

The open traveler is adventurous, imaginative and enjoys learning new things.  You can find plenty of new things to learn about in Myanmar or Thailand, whose people and culture are among the warmest in the world.

As the end of summer is approaching, it’s time to start planning your next vacation. Do you recognize yourself in one of the five core personality types above?

Both my husband and I fit under Openness. We love to travel and experience new things. We usually go to Europe once per year to visit my family for a week and explore another European country for another week. This year, we decided to step outside of our “vacation routine” and go to Hawaii in September to experience the beautiful island of Maui and relax. We look forward to this adventure.

Bon voyage et à bientôt!
